Differences between America and England (that have thrown me off now and then)

There are soooo many differences between America and the U.K. but a lot of them are so small that it is just enough to throw you off and make you realize you're not in America anymore. I've compiled a list of some of the funniest ones I've encountered that have thrown me for a loop! Let me know if there are any you've encountered while abroad.

  • the game Clue is called Cluedo
  • Zucchini is Courgette, Eggplant is Aubergine, and Arugula is Rocket
  • Pants are Trousers (and Underwear is Pants so if you are speaking to someone who isn't familiar with these Americanisms it could get awkward)
  • Driving/ walking on the other side of the street (still throws me off after 6 months here)
  • The accent! Probably the best and most well known difference
  • Everything is smaller in grocery stores, don't expect your shopping to last more than a week
  • Many faucets aren't mixed, they have a separate one for hot and cold water
  • Rainboots are Wellies and they don't wear them nearly as often as we pull them out, much more for muddy walks or torrential rain
  • A lot of brand named things in grocery stores look just slightly different
  • They have American sections in some grocery stores where you can buy gatorade and poptarts!
  • ALL of the Dorito flavors are different (this one personally offends me)
  • The starburst flavors are also all different (another devastating blow)
  • Dogs are allowed in so many places! (this is a close tie with the accent for best difference)
  • Many spellings are different which my laptop loves to remind me of since I changed the language to English U.K.
  • Knowing that America has 50 states is not nearly as common as you'd think
  • Patriotism is also not nearly as common in Europe (to the extent that we have it)
and the list could go on...

A lot of patriotism (especially on the 4th of July of course!)

The incredible cake that was made for me before going away
